Marie Stopes Bangladesh, the Member Secretariat of NEARS organized an Annual General Meeting of NEARS on 23rd May 2017 at Four Seasons Restaurant, Dhanmondi, Bangladesh.
After the registration followed by a lunch, the moderator with humble consent of NEARS president, started the AGM on 2 p.m. The participants gave their introduction and the welcome speech was given by Dr. K.M. Rezaul Haque, the President of NEARS where he greets MSB to reactivate NEARS once again in such a sustainable way. He also gave his thanked to NEARS EC members.
A condolence motion was observed for those members of NEARS who just passed away. All participants took a one-minute silence for the honor of those members.
Imrul Hasan Khan, General Manager- Special Programs of Marie Stopes Bangladesh presented an update on NEARS last year’s activities by pointing out NEARS Registration under The Peoples Republic of Bangladesh Trust Act-1882, Bank account for NEARS and a contemporary website of NEARS (www.nearsbd.org). He emphasized NEARS sustainability by continuing its regular activities such as NEARS EC meetings, subcommittee meetings, finalization of draft long-term strategy of NEARS and any other activities that will help to meet the unmet and unaddressed need of adolescents. An overview of NEARS website also shown through projector in this session and cordial request placed to NEARS members for their organizations information that should be appear on NEARS website to let rest of worlds know regarding NEARS member organization activities for adolescents, the most vulnerable age group.
The financial statement for NEARS stated by Treasurer S.M. Sarwar Jahan where he gave the last year budget allocation, expenditure and variance. He also gave his valuable feedback to catch donors eyes to raise fund for NEARS so that NEARS can expand its working area for youth groups.
Dr, Ikhtiar Uddin Khandaker, Vice President of NEARS moderated the open discussion session by giving his valuable speech. He said that lots of work to do for adolescents and youth portion of Bangladesh. As a Network NEARS can play a significant role to change the current vulnerable scenario of adolescents. On his speech, he highlighted some important goals like ensuring healthy lives as well as universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services. Other members continued the session with their valuable consent saying that ‘NEARS is a network and not an organization. It should work together for adolescents with all its member organizations’.
The AGM ended at 5:00 p.m with a Vote of Thanks by Qazi Shamsul Alam, Vice President of NEARS. He pointed out on his speech the sustainability of NEARS to promote youth friendly services. To achieve this sustainability, he welcomes all NEARS member organizations to expand their hand in this sector. He also said that increasing NEARS membership can be one of the indicator to make NEARS sustainable. He also thanked Marie Stopes Bangladesh Secretariat for organizing the AGM.
